Working Time Rules: Hong Kong
Hong Kong: working hours, holiday calendars and annual leave rules for practical workforce planning.
This is a general overview, not legal advice. Limits, reference periods, exceptions, and record-keeping duties vary by sector and contract and change over time. Confirm the current rules with the official source and a qualified adviser.
Working week used in calculations40 hours per week8 hours a day over 5 days
Minimum annual leave7 to 14 days by serviceThe Labour Department gives seven paid annual leave days after each twelve-month period under a continuous contract. The entitlement rises with service to fourteen days from the ninth year. Holidays and rest-day interactions follow separate rules. Confirm the worker’s eligible service and contract rather than assigning fourteen days to every member of an international team.Source
Statutory working time
Hong Kong’s general holiday calendar and Employment Ordinance statutory holidays are different lists. The general calendar shown here cannot establish every employee’s minimum entitlement. The calculator uses an editable five-day week. For payroll, check the statutory list, continuous-contract eligibility and employer arrangements rather than applying the general calendar automatically.
What to check before you rely on this
- The current statutory limits, reference periods, and any opt-outs.
- Sector or collective-agreement rules that may override the defaults.
- How overtime is authorised, recorded, and compensated.
- What working-time records you must keep and for how long.
