How military time works
Military, or 24-hour, time counts the hours from 00 at midnight through 23, so there is no need for AM or PM. To convert to 12-hour time, subtract 12 from any hour above 12 and add PM; hours below 12 stay the same with AM, and midnight becomes 12 AM.
Sandtime.io lets you record and read time in whichever format your team prefers, so timesheets stay clear across shifts and time zones.
Military time questions
Is midnight 00:00 or 24:00?
Midnight is 00:00 and the start of a new day. The following minute is 00:01, and 24:00 is only used to mark the end of a day, never the start of one.
What is 12 PM in military time?
Noon is 12:00, and the hours after it keep counting up: 1 PM is 13:00, 5 PM is 17:00, and 11 PM is 23:00. Subtract 12 from any hour above 12 to read it back as PM.
Do I write 1430 or 14:30?
Only in speech. In writing, 14:30 and 1430 mean the same time; the colon is common in Europe and in most software, while the four-digit form without it is the military convention.
Why do shift schedules use the 24-hour clock?
Yes. The 24-hour clock removes the AM and PM ambiguity that causes overnight shifts to be logged on the wrong day, which is why timesheets, aviation, healthcare, and emergency services use it.
