Your paid time off
This is a straight-line estimate. Caps, waiting periods, and rounding rules vary by employer and country.
How PTO accrual works
Your yearly allowance divided by the number of pay periods is how much you accrue each period. Multiplied by the periods you have worked and added to any carryover, that is your accrued total; subtract the days you have used to get the balance.
Balances are easy to lose track of on paper. Sandtime.io records time off alongside worked hours, so entitlement, accrual, and remaining balances stay clear.
PTO accrual questions
How much PTO do I accrue per pay period?
Divide the yearly allowance by the number of pay periods. A 20-day allowance across 24 semimonthly periods accrues 0.83 days, or about 6.7 hours, each period.
How many pay periods should I enter?
Twelve for monthly pay, 24 for semimonthly, and 26 for biweekly. Choose the one your payroll actually runs on, because it changes how much has accrued by any given date.
What about days carried over from last year?
Add it as carryover. Carried days sit on top of what you accrue this year, so the balance reflects last year’s leftover before this year’s usage is deducted.
Is this the same as my official balance?
The result is an estimate from the numbers you enter. Your employer’s policy decides the accrual method, any waiting period, caps on carryover, and whether unused days are paid out, so treat it as a check rather than an entitlement.
